09th Jan 2005blog entries, nome., station life

I *slept* until noon today, before I’ve stayed in bed until noon half awake, or looking at the clock every few hours…but today I slept until noon, and then gave myself an extra hour (Lydia and I were doing stuff around the house until the wee hours of the night….I went over to the station at 12:45am and started working on some Washington DC trip stuff). I love not having any responsibilities on the weekends.

So the big trip is less than a week away! This time next week we will have been at home for a few hours, it’s very exciting. I’ve been working more on the DC part of our trip lately at work. I’ve almost secured two press passes to the inauguration which will be awesome; I think the radio booth is only about 50 feet away from the President’s Podium. Right now we have some pretty good “reserved standing” seats that I got from Alaska’s congressman, but the press passes would be great. It should all be amazing! I’ve also been working on getting interviews with each of the Alaska representatives while we are out there.

A project that I’ve been thinking about for quite a while now at work is a public affairs talk show with weekly guests. I got the green light earlier this week and I’ve got some room to play around with my idea. Right now it’s going to be taking place during the morning show on the AM station, I’d like to see it at 8:30 every Wednesday. I’m a big fan of branding, and think that when selling an idea to the public its best to stay consistent. Right now I’m a little torn, I don’t know if I should try and start the show this upcoming week, or if I should wait until I get back. I’d like to get the ball rolling and things started, but the last thing I want is to start a show and then have nothing the next week. I’ve tried calling the Mayor and the principal of the high school but neither have returned my calls.

Right now at the station there isn’t anyone in charge of news, there hasn’t been in about 5 years. I’d like to step up and elevate our local news coverage, and I’ve tried it on a small scale (going to city council meetings, attempting to start this affairs show, etc..) but its hard to do on just a part time basis. I still have many other things to do at the station that I can’t neglect.

I’m also going to be busier when we get back from our trip because I’ve decided to re-start my pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree. I’m going to enroll at the University of Alaska extension here in Nome and take two evening classes this next semester. My hope is to have at least 9 credits by the time we leave Nome so I can transfer them to another school (North Park University, or Northwest University perhaps??) We will see. I’m also hoping to take guitar lessons…… looks like there will be no more relaxing evenings at home!
