08th Oct 2004blog entries, nome., station life

Ok, so when last I wrote earlier today, I was almost frustrated. I was supposed to interview Former Alaska Governor Tony Knowles this morning, but to make a long story short…he came in, but the interview didn’t happen. They told me that they would be back, but when they failed to specify a specific time, I was pretty doubtful. I was also in a bit of a funk for the rest of the day, and tried (especially after working several 10 hour days at the station) to get out early this afternoon. I got my show recorded by 3:45, and got out at 4:00, knowing that I would have to come back later and record my weather conditions.

I went home, and because I was pretty sure that I heard Tony mention that they were headed over to KNOM at 4:00, I tuned in. There he was, taking calls live on the air, for a whole hour! Now, I started to go from almost frustrated….to pretty frustrated. So I went back to the station to sulk. It was a good thing I did that, because at 5:00, once the KNOM interview was over…we got a phone call from the Knowles campaign asking if we would still be available to interview. I hesitantly asked when, and much to my surprise, they said “immediately”. I couldn’t believe that they were actually going to come back!

They drove right over, and after another quick recap (this time, making sure I didn’t take any calls) we got to the interview.

I feel like it went pretty well, especially considering that this was my first journalistic interview (unless you count the man that I talked to a few weeks ago, whose main goal in life was to visit every starbucks on earth). I’m not sure where you go but down when your first interview is with a two-term Governor, and candidate for US Senate on a 50,000watt radio station.
