Happy new Year.

04th Jan 2005blog entries, nome., station life

Lydia and I rang in the new year very late in the grand scheme of things. It was an hour later than we normally celebrate back home in Seattle, and four hours later than was celebrated at times square in New York. We went to a watch night service at the Nome Covenant Church’s pastors house. It was a fun little schin-dig, lots of really nice people, and some good new experiences. There was no countdown, no sparkling cider, none of the anticipation and excitement that I’ve been used to in years past. Instead we gathered around in a circle around 11:30 and each answered a question out of a basket. The questions ranged from “Tell us your favorite bible verse, and why” to “How many pounds do you want to loose this year?” (that’s the one I got). At five till midnight we prayed the new year in. Lydia and I left not to long after that, and when we got home we found that MTV was airing the new years special again, and that the countdown to midnight was going to end around 11:35….so we did it again….this time with a countdown.

The last week has been insanely warm compared to what it was just the week before. Most of last week was spent in the low 30s, just a degree or two below the record that was set in 1950 something…and they say global warming is new.

It snowed a lot last week, so I took on a new hobby. Shoveling. I shovel our steps, I shovel our other steps, our porch, the path to the radio station….I shovel everything, and when its 33 degrees outside its not that bad. I should post some pictures of my path sometime soon, but that just might be a little to much.

I had a “Nome has done some funky stuff with my head” moment yesterday. I was driving out to the high school to deliver donuts on the coffee crew (we do this once a week for the folks who listen to the morning show). Now, the high school is probably 3 or 4 miles out of town, and takes a good 7 or 8 minutes to get to. Everything else is less than 5 minutes away in the car pretty much. On my way out to the high school I find myself impatient, and figuring that I must have missed a turn….but wait, there were no turns to miss!!! I couldn’t believe how long it was taking me to get there. I used to commute over 40 minutes a day to work each morning. This place will drive you crazy, and relax you all at the same time.
