There is no place like nome.
So, here we are. Its been in the “planning stages” for almost two years now, and we are finally here. We flew into Nome this morning at 10:34am, and we were greeted by the entire KICY full time staff (of 4). This morning we woke up at the Bronczyk’s around 6:45, for a departure from the house at 7:10. When we got to the airport (the Ted Stephens Anchorage International Airport) the first thing that we noticed once inside, was the scales at the baggage check. When we left seattle for anchorage, we knew that our bags were going to be overweight, and that we were probably going to have to pay an extra fee. We were very surprised when that part of the check-in process was skipped! We knew that we weren’t going to be as lucky this time….or were we?? Once we check in, we put our sad little boxes up on the scale, and as expected they were overweight. The attendant slapped a “heavy” sticker on the side, and asked for the next box. She let us off the hook again! We were very happy.
After being picked up from the Nome airport, Dennis (the KICY station manager) gave us the official tour around town. It took about 5 minutes.
We then were dropped off at our house, and left to unpack. We had from 11:00am, until 3:00pm to get settled. We started cleaning up our already furnished home, getting rid of the stuff that we weren’t going to use. We took off closet doors, moved the couch, and went to the grocery store. When we went back to the station at 3, Dennis gave us the tour. After that we went to the post office and picked up our massive collection of boxes. We had 6 in total, one was sent the day earlier from Anchorage. We did some more unpacking, made dinner…and went to bed!
Nome is an interesting place, very dirty, very junky, it appears to be poverty stricken… but we aren’t sure yet. Everyone that we have met has been extremely nice. It will definitely be an interesting year.
