employee relations

011th Jul 2004blog entries, cascades experences

I think last week was hard for some people here. I feel like everyone realized that we are now in “the grove” of the summer. There is no family camp to look forward to, each week will look pretty similar for the rest of the summer. We will be pulling the same scotch broom, cleaning the same toilets, selling the same candy. Also, people were starting to forget why we are here…and seeing our tasks simply as a job. One person in specific has not been having a good summer. That’s why when at 3:30 Sunday afternoon (an hour and a half after the “weekend” ends)and I realized this person was missing….It passed through my mind that they might have taken off. They went to a wedding Saturday afternoon with a bunch of other people from camp, and when on Sunday morning everyone else drove back; they decided to stay an extra few hours and catch a ride to camp with a girlfriend who was out in this area for the wedding. 5:00 rolled around and they still hadn’t shown up yet. This missing person was greatly needed in helping clean lodges. I had no idea how to get ahold of this employee, however there was one person who went to the wedding that knew the girlfriends parent’s phone number….in Minnesoda. The idea was that I would be able to get her cell phone number from her parents, however that included me calling her parents and saying that their daughter and her boyfriend were missing….atleast to us.

I called them, and the Mom said that she had just spoken with her daughter in Seattle. I called the cell phone number and spoke with the girlfriend, and she told me they would be arriving at camp soon. I told her that Tyler needed to check in with me or Alan when he got here. I didn’t hear from him that evening, but Alan said that they had a nice little conversation when he got back to camp around 8pm that evening.

It was a frustrating experence, but hopefully things will get better for this person at camp.
